Leysis Quesada Vera

Leysis grew up in a small town in the countryside of Matanzas province of Cuba. A large part of her early photographs were inspired by the lives of people in her home town. She photographs the interiors of their homes and their everyday life. Her interior shots wonderfully use the natural light sources from windows and doors.

Now living in Havana she lives in the neighborhood Sitios and has two daughters. Her neighborhood, daughters and the emotional lives and struggles of women are the main subject matter of her work.

Her oldest daughter has been a student of ballet and this too has also become a focus of her work. She has photographed her daughter and ballerinas set in the background of Havana, as well as worked with the Cuban National Ballet photographing their rehearsals and behind the scenes.
